Griquas pounce on exciting Kleynhans─── MORGAN PIEK 14:03 Wed, 25 Mar 2026
The Suzuki Griquas have made their first signing from the 2026 Varsity Cup as they continue to strengthen their squad for the season.
Maynard Kleynhans, a powerful and exciting forward from the University of the Free State Shimlas, will link up with the Peacock Blues after signing with the Currie Cup champions, and he’s set to be a major asset in the pack.
While the Shimlas are still battling to reach the semi-finals, Kleynhans has been outstanding for the two-time champions. His tireless work rate, physicality in both attack and defence, and impressive burst of speed have made him a standout performer.

Kleynhans’ versatility is a huge bonus. He can lock down the lineout as a solid lock, but as a loose forward, he’s equally adept at pilfering the ball on the ground and turning over possession – something he showcased on Monday night against the UCT Ikeys.
Griquas coach Pieter Bergh, a former Varsity Cup coach himself, has a sharp eye for young talent. He has built a reputation for scouting promising Varsity Cup players, especially in Bloemfontein, and isn’t afraid to throw them into the deep end. Several Varsity Cup stars, including Zane Bester, Eddie Davids, and Lourens and Derik Pretorius, have gone on to win the Currie Cup with the Griquas in 2025, setting a strong precedent for Kleynhans.
Kleynhans certainly won’t be the last player to be contracted by the Griquas this season. Hailing from Tzaneen in Limpopo, Kleynhans earned his first big break with a bursary to play rugby for Hoërskool Garsfontein in Pretoria during his Grade 11 year.
From there, coach André Tredoux brought him into the Shimlas setup, where he’s been invaluable this season despite missing a few games due to injury.
Forwards coach Franco van der Merwe told OFM Sport he’s excited to work with Kleynhans and believes the young forward has a bright future ahead.
“We’re really excited about him – he’s a quality player with a massive engine, a strong ball carrier, and a natural athlete,” said Van der Merwe.

“We’re looking at him more as a seven, as a loose forward, and I can’t wait to work with him. He’s got great character, he’s willing to put in the hard yards, and while it will take a bit of time for him to find his feet, I’m confident we can develop him into a very good senior player.”
Van der Merwe added that Kleynhans’ character makes him an ideal fit for Griquas rugby.
“I’ve spoken to coaches who’ve worked with him at school level, and they all highlight his athleticism and character,” Van der Merwe said.

“Considering his journey, it’s clear he’s come from humble beginnings and hasn’t always had the easiest road – that builds resilience. He’s a hard worker, and we’re really looking forward to welcoming him to Griquas. I believe he’ll fit seamlessly into our team.”
Meanwhile, the Griquas will take on the Griffons in Kimberley on Saturday, with kick-off set for 14:00.
