Alleged Kuruman bank scammer to appear in court─── REFILWE BEKANE 08:44 Tue, 03 Jun 2025

A suspect will appear in the Kuruman Magistrate’s Court on Monday (2/6) on charges of fraud and theft after allegedly defrauding victims at ATMs.
The suspect (61) was arrested on Sunday at a business in Kuruman after police discovered bank cards, cash, clothes, and a cellphone in his possession, said Northern Cape police spokesperson Molefi Shemane. The suspect allegedly defrauded victims at various ATMs the day before.
Anyone who might have fallen victim to card scamming is urged to visit the local police station and report the crime.
“The district commissioner, Brig. Kenneth Baloyi, applauded the two officers for their vigilance and speedy response that led to the apprehension of the suspect and the confiscations made,” said Shemane.
227 suspects arrested
Meanwhile, officers arrested 227 suspects for crimes including contravening the Firearms Control Act, illegal possession of firearms, and illegal possession of explosives during Operation Shanela in the Northern Cape.
Police actions were conducted from Monday to Sunday across the five districts. During vehicle checkpoints and roadblocks, 6,534 people were searched and 3,100 vehicles were stopped.
Compliance inspections were conducted at, among others, second-hand goods dealers, informal businesses and liquor outlets, of which 15 were found to be unlicensed and closed.
Drugs, weapons, liquor confiscated
During the disruptive actions, police confiscated drugs, dangerous weapons, a significant amount of liquor, and copper cables, said Shemane.
Police have reassured communities that officers will continue to stamp down the authority of the state during these operations. Those who commit or intend to commit crime, will be arrested and face the full might of the law.
