The Minister of Employment and Labour has condemned the exploitation of public resources by individuals within her own department.

This follows a successful coordinated police operation targeting an extensive fraud scheme involving Unemployment Insurance Fund (UIF) claims.

The operation, executed across Bloemfontein, Bethlehem, and parts of Gauteng, led to the arrest of several suspects, including a 42-year-old manager from the Department of Labour’s Bloemfontein office on Thursday (3/7). The suspects are allegedly part of a network that manipulated UIF claims for personal gain.

Initial investigations suggest the scheme defrauded the department of over R1.5 million. Authorities allege the stolen funds were distributed among various participants in the scam, including recruiters known as “runners”, and, in some cases, even the individuals whose identities were unlawfully used.

Minister Nomakhosazana Meth expressed deep dismay over the incident.

“We are appalled by the betrayal of public trust by individuals who seek to enrich themselves through criminal means, especially where these crimes involve our own staff. Such acts not only undermine our systems but also rob deserving South Africans of support during times of need.”

She confirmed that the department is working closely with law enforcement agencies and has already begun internal investigations. Disciplinary procedures will be instituted against any implicated employees.

Meth praised the swift action of the South African Police Service and vowed decisive action: “No stone will be left unturned in dealing with fraud in our department.”

All arrested individuals are scheduled to appear before the Bloemfontein Magistrate’s Court on Monday (8/7). Police have indicated that additional arrests are expected as the investigation unfolds.
