The North West Department of Health officially handed over six state-of-the-art mobile clinic trucks to the Bojanala District Municipality to improve access to healthcare services.

The handover event on Friday (18/7), which took place at the Mothutlong Clinic in the Madibeng sub-district, was led by North West Health MEC Sello Lehari. The event formed part of the department’s Mandela Day programme.

It was attended by several dignitaries, including Madibeng Local Municipality Mayor Dauglas Maimane, ward councillors from Wards 20 and 21, and representatives of the In Plats Community Development Trust – an initiative of Sibanye-Stillwater Mine.

According to provincial health spokesperson Tshegofatso Mothibedi, the mobile clinics were donated through a public-private partnership between Sibanye-Stillwater and the Department of Health. The mobile clinics, equipped to deliver primary healthcare services, are expected to bring much-needed care to under-resourced and remote areas within the district.

Mothibedi said, in addition to the clinic handover, Mandela Day activities at the Mothutlong Clinic included the expansion of the facility’s vegetable garden, general maintenance, painting, and improvements to clinic infrastructure. Door locks were replaced for improved security, and patient files were reorganised for better service efficiency. Clothing, sanitary towels, and toiletries were also donated to vulnerable community members.

Addressing a packed community hall near the clinic, MEC Lehari encouraged residents to embrace the spirit of service exemplified by Nelson Mandela and take ownership of the facilities being provided.

“We need more men and women who will go beyond just 67 minutes and make both individual and collective impacts in our society. We need to join hands to improve what the government already provides. Communities must also take care of the facilities we are handing over to you,” said MEC Lehari.

Mothibedi added that Mandela Day was observed across all districts in the province, with the Department of Health spearheading various community impact projects aimed at honouring the legacy of Nelson Rolihlahla Mandela.
