Despite not being a member of the prestigious G20 group, Palestine has pledged its unwavering support to the coalition of the world’s major economies.

The G20 represents 85% of global GDP, 75% of international trade, and two-thirds of the global population, making it a key driver of international cooperation and dialogue. Palestine’s gesture to stand in solidarity with the G20 forms part of its broader effort to cultivate meaningful relationships with global powers and demonstrate its commitment to international cooperation.

On Thursday (7/8), the first leg of the G20 Cultural Diplomacy Roadshow kicked off in Bloemfontein. The initiative is designed to highlight the power of culture in fostering international exchanges and bridging gaps between diverse global communities. The event, which started at the Oliewenhuis Art Museum, was attended by various international representatives.

Among the notable attendees were minister of international relations Thandi Moraka, Free State Premier MaQueen Letsoha-Mathae, Exco members, and Mangaung Mayor Gregory Nthatisi.

Moraka said the roadshow was not just a celebration of culture but also a platform to underscore the province’s rich cultural heritage. “This event serves as a powerful platform to deepen international cooperation and further the G20’s vision of inclusivity and collaboration.”

Speaking to OFM News , Palestinian ambassador to South Africa, Shaun Edward Byneveldt, expressed that despite Palestine not being a member of the G20, it stands firmly behind the group.

“We came to support the department of international relations and cooperation (Dirco), as the Dirco has always supported Palestine, especially during the difficult times the country is going through.”
Meanwhile, the Chinese Ambassador to South Africa, Wu Peng, echoed the significance of cultural diplomacy. In his remarks, he stressed the importance of events like the G20 Cultural Diplomacy Roadshow in fostering mutual understanding between countries.

“I am very honoured and glad to visit Bloemfontein. In this beautiful landscape, I can enjoy a very diverse culture. We believe our civilisation should encourage exchange, and I think this cultural event is very important to enhance mutual understanding and mutual respect between different countries,” he said.

The Free State Roadshow also aligns with the broader theme of the G20 Presidency, which is focused on “Solidarity, Equality & Sustainability”. The sub-theme, “Advancing Cultural Diplomacy to Build Sustainable Communities”, emphasises the role of culture in fostering sustainable development and positive international relationships.

The cultural exchange in Bloemfontein includes an extensive two-day program, where representatives from various countries, including China, Palestine, Lesotho, Burundi, Cameroon, Germany, Mali, and Nigeria, will explore the vibrant culture of Mangaung and its surrounding townships.

The guests will be treated to a gala dinner at the City Hall, followed by a nightlife experience on 2nd Avenue, which will provide an immersive experience of Bloemfontein’s urban culture.

The roadshow will continue on Friday (8/8) with a stage program at the Macufe Village and culminate in an investment roundtable, where discussions around economic growth, cultural exchange, and future collaboration will take place.
