Workers at the Free State psychiatric hospital in Bloemfontein are up in arms, demanding full payment for hours worked and improved working conditions.

The employees have voiced their frustration over what they describe as unfair labour practices and a lack of action from management. Erick Mothae (56), a nurse representative within the institution, said employees are working 12-hour shifts but are only being paid for seven hours.

“Employees are not satisfied." The workers have engaged with the provincial department to inquire about the situation, but progress has been slow.

Mothae said the workers have shown management the relevant policy outlining proper payment procedures. However, management has reportedly stated they need to make submissions first before the full payments can be made, a process the workers are unwilling to wait for.

“We don’t want to wait long,” Mothae emphasised, reflecting the urgency of the situation for the underpaid staff. In their efforts to find a solution, the workers have conducted research with other institutions like Weskoppies Hospital and a hospital in Kimberley to compare payment policies.

The Health MEC, Monyatso Mahlatsi, has promised to send delegates to address their concerns directly. Mothae also raised other critical issues plaguing the institution. He pointed out contract workers have not been absorbed into permanent positions, a matter of job security for many.

A serious concern for the staff is the lack of adequate security, which has led to people infiltrating hospital wards at night. Mothae said this issue has also been raised with management, but management didn’t address the issues at hand.

“The department is sending officials to collect a memorandum from the workers,” said Free State health spokesperson Mondli Mvambi.
