North West RCL president condemns learners’ misconduct─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 14:03 Thu, 28 Aug 2025

The president of the representative council of learners (RCL) of North West has strongly condemned the behaviour of a group of learners involved in a disturbing incident at Hoër Tegniese Skool Klerksdorp.
Bonginkosi Motaung, a Grade 12 learner from Holy Family Secondary School in Mogwase, urged his peers across the province to show respect towards teachers and stay focused on their academic responsibilities.
A viral video caused public outrage, showing several learners dressed in overalls and balaclavas storming the school toilets in what appeared to be a coordinated act of disruption. According to reports, a teacher approached the learners in an attempt to bring them back to class but was met with aggression. The learners allegedly poured water on the educator and threw papers at him.
Motaung described the video as deeply troubling and called for learner accountability and reflection. “It was a very disturbing video, and I feel it’s a video or situation that not only needs adult intervention but also intervention from the learners, a peer-to-peer conversation.
“Now, learners, I would like to remind you of the reason why you are in school. You are there in school to build your future. Do not forget that learning is a privilege, and never misuse your privilege.
“Teachers are there to help and guide you, the least you can do is at least give them some respect and some love they deserve. Let us never drop the culture of learning in our country.”
North West education spokesperson Mphata Molokwane confirmed the Hoër Tegniese Skool Klerksdorp responded swiftly to the incident. Staff members acted decisively to prioritise the safety of learners, securing the school premises and removing those involved from the scene.
Formal disciplinary process
Following the instructions of the School Governing Body (SGB), it was resolved that all involved learners would be suspended for five (5) school days. This suspension is an interim measure pending the outcome of a formal disciplinary process in accordance with the school's code of conduct.
The parents of the learners were invited to an official meeting on Thursday (28/8), during which they were informed of the decision to suspend them.
The suspension was implemented to ensure the safety and well-being of all learners and staff.
‘The school management also brought order and sanity to the school’
“The school management also brought order and sanity to the school, and eventually, normal academic activities resumed,” Molokwane said.
He added that a formal investigation was launched, and the learners involved were identified. Their parents were immediately notified of the incident.
North West education MEC Viola Motsumi labelled the learners’ actions as “extremely barbaric and unacceptable”, adding such conduct will not be tolerated under any circumstances.
Meanwhile, Motaung echoed MEC Motsumi’s stance, stressing the need for psychological support for all those affected.
