MEC at Golden Gate hike: ‘Education is more than just classrooms’─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:58 Fri, 29 Aug 2025

Education is not only about classrooms, textbooks and offices. It is also about nurturing the whole person, the whole mind, the body and the spirit, says Free State education MEC Julia Maboya.
Maboya talked during a hike near the Glen Reenen Campsite in the Golden Gate Highlands National Park in the Eastern Free State on Friday (29/8). “Today reminds us that wellbeing is not a luxury, it is a necessity,” Maboya said when officially opening the Kgodumodumo Walk and Hike event, inviting all to embrace the power of both the physical and collective journey.
Maboya acknowledged the heavy responsibilities carried by teachers and officials, noting that their duty to inspire, educate, and uplift often comes at the cost of neglecting their own health and well-being.
The event, which began early in the morning, drew nearly 600 officials and stakeholders, all gathered to walk, hike and reflect.
Maboya emphasised the importance of physical activity, citing that walking and hiking may seem simple, but are potent tools for restoring balance to one’s life. “Walking and hiking are simple yet powerful acts. They renew the body, clear the mind, and strengthen the bonds of teamwork.”
Maboya drew attention to the unity among participants, stating that what made the event special was not only the natural beauty and surroundings, but the unity that bound participants.
It was a direct reflection of the strength found in solidarity, the principle of Ubuntu, which calls for people to move together, support each other, and achieve shared goals, she said.
‘Let us walk with joy, hike with courage, and breathe in the fresh air of wellness and renewal’
“Let us walk with joy, hike with courage, and breathe in the fresh air of wellness and renewal,” Maboya encouraged the participants. “May this journey remind us that balance is possible, that resilience is built step by step, and that unity is our greatest strength.”
Students from various schools in Qwaqwa also joined Maboya during the week at the Kgodumodumo Dinosaur Interpretation Centre in the national park to learn about heritage and culture.
Located within the Golden Gate Highlands National Park near Clarens, the centre offers a world-class experience, showcasing South Africa’s rich archaeological and paleontological heritage.
The centre, worth R120 million, was recently launched by tourism minister Patricia de Lille, who emphasised its importance not only as a tourist attraction but also as an educational tool.
Earlier in the week, Maboya also led the flagship Women’s Month Celebration at the Phuthaditjhaba Indoor Sports Centre, reinforcing the theme “Women Solidarity Towards Quality Rural Education”. This event brought together hundreds of women, including mothers, caregivers, educators, and community leaders, all united in their shared vision for the betterment of education in rural areas.
The celebration served as both a tribute to women and a firm statement about their central role in shaping the future of education, particularly in underserved rural communities.
