Municipalities in the Northern Cape have been urged to submit their annual financial statements (AFS) and annual performance reports (APRs) to the Auditor-General (AG) by Sunday (31/8).

This call comes from the Department of Cooperative Governance, Human Settlements, and Traditional Affairs MEC, Bentley Vass, who emphasised the importance of adherence to the deadline.

The 31 municipalities have been reminded those who have already completed their reports should submit them early, rather than waiting until the last minute. This deadline is part of the national Operation Clean Audits plan, which aims to improve financial accountability and governance across the country.

Tebogo Monyo, spokesperson for the provincial department, said the timely submission of these documents is not just a formality but a cornerstone of good governance, financial transparency, and accountability.

“We are calling on all our municipalities to act with a sense of urgency and responsibility. Submitting the AFS and APRs on time is crucial for the AG to conduct audits in a timely and efficient manner.

“This process is essential for us to assess the financial health and performance of our municipalities and to ensure public funds are being managed effectively for the benefit of our communities.”

Failure to meet the deadline would result in severe consequences. Municipal councils would be required to request the speaker to investigate and implement appropriate actions against those responsible for the delay.

This could lead to an escalation of governance challenges within the municipalities, further delaying the crucial audit processes.

Noncompliance would also result in the municipalities being reported to the Provincial Legislature and parliament.

“Noncompliance will also hinder our collective efforts to achieve clean audits across the province, which is a key objective of the provincial administration and a non-negotiable part of our commitment to the people of the Northern Cape.”
