Two learners from Lesedi Secondary School in Bronkhorstspruit have been granted bail by the local magistrates’ court after being charged with the premeditated murder of a fellow pupil.

Mlehalinye Montasi, 20, a Grade 12 learner, and Kgotlhello Mathabathe, 19, a Grade 10 learner, stand accused of stabbing Lehabo Mokonyane on June 17 shortly after learners had completed writing exams. Montasi was granted bail of R6,000, while Mathabathe was released on R3,000 bail.

According to reports, the incident occurred as Mokonyane, also a Grade 10 learner, was leaving the school premises. It is alleged that the two accused confronted him near the school gate, leading to a violent altercation.

During the incident, one of the accused is believed to have restrained Mokonyane while the other stabbed him multiple times with a sharp object.

The injured pupil was rushed to a nearby hospital but succumbed to his injuries a few hours later.

During their bail application, the accused cited the need to continue with their schooling.  However, the prosecutor, Karabo Sebela, opposed the application. Sebela highlighted serious concerns, including Montasi's alleged illegal immigration status, arguing that it made him a flight risk.

Additionally, both accused are reportedly known to witnesses, raising fears of potential interference in the case.

Strict bail conditions

Gauteng NPA spokesperson Lumka Mahanjana confirmed despite the state’s opposition, the magistrate granted bail under strict conditions.

These include mandatory attendance of all court proceedings until the trial concludes, prohibition on any direct or indirect contact with witnesses, and compliance with correctional supervision and all accompanying regulations

The case was postponed to 10 October, when it will be transferred to the Regional Court for further proceedings.
