A life sentence has been handed down by the Molopo Regional Court following a brutal murder that shocked the Dithakong community. The court found the accused guilty of fatally stabbing a man in a local tavern in July 2023.

Pako Tlape (35) was sentenced on Monday (15/9) to life imprisonment for the murder of Isaac Soso Sebule (31). He was also declared unfit to possess a firearm. According to Sivenathi Gunya, communications officer for the NPA in North West, Tlape pleaded guilty during Monday’s proceedings.

“The court heard that on 29 July 2023, he entered the Bhekindabazakho Tavern in Dithakong village, apparently searching for someone. Upon seeing Sebule, Tlape approached him and, without saying a word, fatally stabbed him with a knife.

No remorse

“The victim was declared dead at the scene,” said Gunya.

Tlape was arrested the same day and has been in custody since. Prosecutor Nthabiseng Thabeng argued that Tlape showed no remorse and that the crime was senseless, leaving no compelling reason to deviate from the prescribed life sentence.

A victim impact statement, compiled by Sebule’s mother with the assistance of court preparation officer Thembinkosi Madiba, described the ongoing trauma, fear, and psychological toll of the loss.

NPA welcomes judgment

According to Gunya, Magistrate Mathews, in her judgment, underscored the sanctity of life, stating that the victim’s right to life had been unjustly taken away. She emphasised the court’s duty to uphold the law and to deter lawlessness in a society increasingly affected by violence.

Following the sentencing, director of public prosecutions in North West, Dr Rachel Makhari, commended the prosecution and investigation teams.

“The NPA remains steadfast in ensuring accountability. Violent crimes will not be tolerated, and perpetrators will face the full might of the law,” said Makhari.
