The Free State department of community safety will strengthen the security at its traffic testing stations across the province after a series of attacks.

In response to a spate of criminal attacks in August and September in towns such as Heilbron, Kroonstad, Kestell, Lindley, Marquard, Phuthaditjhaba, Virginia, and Viljoenskroon, the department is implementing enhanced safety measures to ensure uninterrupted services. It’s collaborating closely with the police to bring perpetrators to justice.

Fingerprints have been collected, syndicates are being tracked, and investigations are ongoing to ensure accountability.

At the four stations, security officers were tied up, people broke in through windows, doors, and roofs, alarm systems were disabled, face value documents were stolen, and there was malicious property damage. The department ensured that vehicle and driving licensing processes would be safeguarded, allowing communities to access essential services without fear of disruption.

“The DA condemns the wave of violent attacks on traffic testing stations in the Free State,” said Free State DA road and transport spokesperson Jafta Mokoena. “The reality is these incidents are the direct consequence of ANC failures in budgeting, maintenance, and security.

“We unequivocally condemn these attacks, but it is undeniable that the ANC’s neglect and failure to properly fund security left these facilities exposed. Many testing stations in the province were already struggling to function, while others have been shut down for as long as two months.

“The latest attacks further exacerbate a crisis that directly impacts motorists and transport businesses who wish to comply with the law but are prevented from doing so, placing additional strain on their ability to operate.”

The department has called on communities to become active partners in protecting their local traffic testing stations. By reporting suspicious activity and supporting security personnel, community members can help prevent future attacks and ensure uninterrupted service delivery.

A stern warning was sent out to the perpetrators that their actions will not be tolerated, and the department stands firm in protecting its traffic testing services and the safety of its officers.
