Free State Destea continues to empower youth─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:39 Tue, 07 Oct 2025

The Free State department of economic, small business development, tourism, and environmental affairs (Destea) continues to drive youth empowerment in the province through innovative tourism projects like Wild Wonder.
Spearheaded by Amogelang Modise, project manager of the Wild Wonder initiative, the event blends theatre, nature, and culture into a unique glamping experience that reimagines bush tourism. Launched in 2023, Wild Wonder was born from the vision of bringing theatre to the bush.
It's an immersive experience combining live performances, gourmet culinary arts, and luxurious outdoor living.
Set against the breathtaking backdrop of the Erfenis Dam Nature Reserve, the event invited guests into a curated glamping village complete with en-suite tents, a bar, a stage for performances, and a farm-to-table kitchen.

“As the head of communications for Canvas Republic, I’m thrilled to reflect on the resounding success of the Wild Wonder event, which brought 300 discerning guests to the breathtaking Erfenis Dam Nature Reserve in Theunissen from 19 to 21 September,” said Modise.
“This inaugural edition blended luxury glamping with soul-stirring live music performed by Sannere, Presss, and Fistaz Mixwel, culinary offerings, and invigorating outdoor adventures, creating moments of pure wonder under the African sky.”
More than just an event, Wild Wonder is a celebration of the Free State’s natural and cultural heritage. It also serves as a platform for local economic development.
By showcasing entrepreneurs, emerging musicians from QwaQwa, Welkom, and Bloemfontein, as well as adventure guides, the project circulates opportunity back into the communities.

Wild Wonder honours nature by embedding eco-conscious practices into every space of the experience. This included sunrise yoga sessions, including guided nature meditations on biodiversity, and the culinary team highlighting foraged herbs and low-water farming techniques in farm-to-table dinners.
“We implemented a zero-can and glass-bottle policy on our festival and dining sites, where beverages were decanned into plastic branded cups.”
He said Destea’s support, along with partnerships like Motheo College’s student placements, ensures the event empowers young people with real-world skills and opportunities.
