About 105,051 people visited National Parks Week from 22 September to 28 September.

Since its launch in 2006, National Parks Week has attracted 982,035 visitors to all participating parks. Sanparks, in a media statement, thanked all South Africans who participated in the week-long event, particularly teachers and school groups.

Sanparks head of communication JP Louw said the initiative encourages South Africans to spend time with friends and family, learn about their heritage, and establish a connection with nature.

An increasing public awareness of the cultural and natural value of protected areas is reflected in this year’s tremendous turnout.

Multiple factors contributed to this year’s success, including increased public awareness of the importance of national parks, better outreach initiatives in the weeks preceding the event, and increased public engagement.

A major emphasis was on schools, and open communication promoted educational visits.

“National parks are a valuable asset that belongs to all South Africans. Sanparks’ role is simply to be the custodian of this heritage. For us, reaching this milestone is a significant achievement and very encouraging.”

As National Parks Week continues to grow, Sanparks is reflecting not only on rising attendance but on deeper lessons about sustainable tourism. Louw said promoting accessibility to all South Africans must go hand-in-hand with conservation.

The organisation has embraced a more holistic approach that blends science with indigenous knowledge systems, cultural heritage, and environmental respect. “What we are exploring is how to take what’s known as indigenous knowledge systems and meaningfully embed this African science into the work we do.”
