Police half marathon unites over 800 runners in Bloemfontein─── ZENANDE MPAME 10:30 Sat, 11 Oct 2025

The streets of Bloemfontein came alive as more than 800 runners laced up for the inaugural Free State police half marathon on Saturday (11/10).
The event brought together police officers, athletes, and residents, all running for a shared purpose, to honour fallen police members and raise funds for the education of their children. The event was such a great success that the police will consider making it an annual event.
Hosted by the Free State police service, proceeds from the marathon were directed to the South African Police Service Education Trust (Sapset), a fund established in 2010 to support the educational needs of children whose parents died in the line of duty.
It covers educational expenses from Grade R to tertiary level, ensuring the children of fallen officers are not left behind. This includes everything from tuition to school uniforms, giving them the tools and opportunities to build brighter futures.
“The Free State South African Police Service hosted the inaugural Free State SAPS half marathon on Saturday,” said police spokesperson Lorraine Earle. The event marked a historic first for the province, not just as a fitness event, but as a symbol of unity, remembrance, and hope.
“Throughout the race, camaraderie and emotion filled the air. Police officers ran side by side, offering water, encouragement, and even arms of support during the more gruelling kilometres.”

“The event became more than a fundraiser; it became a healing moment of collective strength. The response exceeded expectations. Runners flooded the streets, cheered on by supporters and fellow police members stationed along the route.”
The Free State provincial commissioner, Lt. Gen. Baile Motswenyane, said this is more than a race. “I am overwhelmed. It was a great success. Think of all the lives we will be able to change. How many children who lost their parents can now chase their dreams knowing they have financial backup?”
