Mountain Zebra joins as 9th park in Sanparks-Sanlam SMME programme─── EVA MOLEKANE 09:00 Wed, 29 Oct 2025
The community surrounding Mountain Zebra National Park (MZNP) in the Eastern Cape is next in line to benefit as Sanparks and the Sanlam Group expand their SMME support programme to a ninth park.
The initiative will soon allow local suppliers to access interest-free loans on issued purchase orders, a move aimed at boosting the participation of small enterprises in the park’s value chain and stimulating local economic growth. According to Sanparks, the programme seeks to promote inclusivity and broaden economic participation by offering business support and funding to suppliers within a 100-kilometre radius of each participating park.
Building on its success in the Kruger, Garden Route, Addo Elephant, Table Mountain, West Coast, Golden Gate, Marakele, and Mapungubwe National Parks, the expansion to MZNP marks another milestone in creating meaningful economic opportunities for communities living near protected areas.

“By extending the programme to MZNP, which is now the ninth park we’re reaching, we’re reinforcing our commitment to inclusive growth and local empowerment,” said Sanparks head of socio-economic transformation, Skumsa Ntshanga.
Strong financial performance
The announcement comes as Sanparks reports strong operational and financial results for the 2024/25 financial year.
Presenting to Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Forestry, Fisheries and the Environment, Sanparks chief executive officer Hapiloe Sello confirmed an 11% increase in revenue – from R3.67 billion to R4.1 billion – marking the first time the organisation has surpassed the R4-billion threshold.
Notably, 75% of this income was generated through commercial activities, underscoring the success of Sanparks’ tourism and business strategies.

Sello added that Sanparks holds a net cash balance of R2.7 billion and remains in a strong solvency position, with total assets exceeding liabilities by R3.7 billion. These figures, she said, reflect a financially stable and well-managed institution supported by consistent revenue growth and sound liquidity.
The organisation also received an unqualified audit for the financial year, further reinforcing confidence in its financial governance and operational oversight.
National Parks Week
Meanwhile, Sanparks recorded 105,051 visitors to its national parks during National Parks Week, held from 22 to 28 September. Since the initiative’s launch in 2006, it has attracted nearly one million South Africans to explore the country’s natural heritage.
Sanparks head of communication JP Louw said several factors contributed to this year’s success, including stronger public awareness of the importance of national parks, improved outreach initiatives in the lead-up to the event, and greater public engagement.
