Free State 4x4 Eco challenge showcase hidden natural treasure─── REFILWE BEKANE 11:16 Sun, 23 Nov 2025
The department of economic, small business development, tourism, and environmental affairs hosted the Free State camp-out experience and 4x4 Eco challenge this weekend.
The event was held as an effort to promote the Free State as an inland destination of choice. The aim is to move beyond its status as a go-through province and encourage exploration and rediscovery.
The excursions connected tourists with nature, fostering a greater appreciation of Free State adventure and reigniting eco-tourism.
“This is the best, breathtaking exercise. We’ve never seen anything like this. I think this is the most hidden human treasure,” said Ben Ngeyakhe from Ford Human Auto.
The multi-day challenge took place at the Tussen Die Riviere (TDR) Nature Reserve, located 15km from Bethulie in the Xhariep District.
The reserve is distinguished by its location at the confluence of the Caledon River (Mohokare) and the Orange River (Senqu).
The area provided sanctuary to large herds of game, including blesbok, black wildebeest, springbok, eland, gemsbok, mountain reedbuck, impala, kudu, red hartebeest, warthog, and zebra, with buffalo taking shelter along the bushy riverbanks.

TDR Nature Reserve’s landscape featured characteristic flora like sour karee, wild olive trees, and blue quarri scattered over the koppie areas, while weeping willow and star apple trees fringed the two rivers.
Visitors took advantage of the nearly 120km dirt road routes and a designated 4x4 route that passed unusual and beautiful rock formations. The reserve offered self-catering chalets, conference facilities, and extensive camping areas to accommodate guests.
During the two-day experience, campers stayed in tents and engaged in traditional outdoor activities.

These included sitting by a campfire, participating in a game drive, and joining the potjiekos challenge.
“The 4x4 terrain is to die for with mountainous areas. There are so many camping areas that you need to come and see it. Bring your 4x4,” said Ngeyakhe.
