Four Paws urges South Africans to adopt rescued big cats this Valentine’s Day─── ZENANDE MPAME 16:16 Mon, 02 Feb 2026
This Valentine’s Day, a global animal welfare organisation is calling on animal lovers to celebrate love in a meaningful way by symbolically adopting a rescued big cat.
Through this programme, residents will help ensure lifelong care for lions and other animals that have been rescued from abuse and exploitation. This forward-looking act allows supporters to become part of each animal’s recovery journey, contributing to long-term care, protection, and enrichment, said Four Paws.
Many of these animals were rescued from circuses, zoos, or private ownership, where their welfare was compromised. So through the Big Cat Adoption Programme, supporters can help provide lifelong care for lions and tigers housed at Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary in the Free State.
Contributions from adopters help fund nutritious meals, enrichment activities, and vital veterinary care, including routine check-ups and vaccinations. “Valentine’s Day is about love, and what better way to express it than by helping animals who have endured so much?” said Four Paws South Africa director Fiona Miles.
“Every symbolic adoption supports food, medical care, and sanctuary for these incredible creatures. It’s a gift that lasts far beyond the day. It‘s a gift rooted in compassion, Ubuntu, and sustainability.”
As part of the programme, sponsors receive a personalised adoption certificate featuring a photograph of their chosen big cat. They also have access to exclusive email updates, including stories, images, and behind-the-scenes insights into the animal’s adventure, progress, and overall wellness at the sanctuary, she said.
The symbolic adoption includes donating in a loved one’s name to support rescue and care projects across South Africa, as well as purchasing eco-friendly Four Paws merchandise that contributes directly to animal welfare initiatives.
“Instead of chocolates or flowers, choose an ethical gift that gives lions a second chance at life,” said Miles. “Your support helps provide food, medical care, and a safe home at Lionsrock Big Cat Sanctuary in the Free State.”
Animal lovers can visit www.4-paws.org.za to adopt a big cat or explore other ethical gifting options and be part of giving rescued animals the safe, loving environment they deserve, she said.
