North West police have confirmed the death of a police officer who drowned while on duty in Phokeng.

Cst. Gift Mota (25), originally from Ermelo in Mpumalanga, was stationed at the visible policing crime prevention unit in Phokeng after being transferred there in November. Mota was on patrol with fellow officers when they were approached by a resident who claimed to have spotted a suspect linked to robberies and burglaries.

The officers accompanied him to the Masosobane and Raffredy sections, a bushy area near a dam.

Upon spotting the suspect, the police gave chase. The suspect allegedly ran into the dam, and during the pursuit, Mota entered the water.

He disappeared whilst swimming after the suspect, said North West police spokesperson Col. Adéle Myburgh.

The police diving unit was immediately activated and later recovered Mota’s body from the dam shortly after the incident. An inquest docket has been opened to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

Acting provincial police commissioner Maj. Gen. (Dr) Ryno Naidoo expressed his condolences to the family, friends, and colleagues of the deceased officer.

“We have lost a dedicated police officer, who made the ultimate sacrifice in the line of duty while serving and protecting the community. Cst. Mota’s bravery and commitment will not be forgotten. “The police stand with his family during this painful time and will ensure that they receive the necessary support.”

Police have also called on communities to continue working closely with law enforcement in the fight against crime, while acknowledging the dangers police officers face daily in the execution of their duties.
