North West police spokesperson Adele Myburgh said the suspect (34) handed himself over to police and was subsequently arrested and detained. Police were alerted to the incident on Friday (13/2) at approximately 05:35. 

Officers responded to a call reporting a stabbing outside a tavern in the Klerksdorp Central Business District along Voortrekker Street.

“Upon arrival at the scene, police found the body of ANC ward councillor Molefi Sello (46), a councillor at Matlosana Municipality, lying on the ground with a stab wound on the neck.” 

Sello was certified dead at the scene by paramedics.

His killing has sent shockwaves through the community and the local political sphere.

A multidisciplinary investigation was immediately launched, involving members of the Potchefstroom Anti-Gang Investigation Unit, Klerksdorp Detectives, and the Provincial Organised Crime Unit.

Preliminary investigations indicate the fatal stabbing allegedly occurred during an argument reportedly linked to a dispute over a girlfriend.

The speaker of the municipality, Mondlane Ngwenya, conveyed her condolences to Sello’s family, the community, and his political colleagues.
