Matlosana mourns death of slain ANC councillor─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:55 Sat, 14 Feb 2026
Condolences continue to pour in following the death of an ANC Ward 24 councillor in Kanana, Orkney in the Matlosana municipality, North West.
Molefi Sello was found with a stab wound to his upper body in Voortrekker Street, near the Sars offices in the central business district.
Sello’s body was discovered with one stab wound, and he was pronounced dead upon the arrival of paramedics, said North West police spokesperson Col Adéle Myburgh. Police have since launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding his death.
The speaker of the Matlosana Local Municipality, Mondlane Ngwenya, conveyed her condolences to Sello’s family, the community, and his political colleagues.
“We are deeply saddened by the passing of Cllr Sello and extend our heartfelt sympathy to his loved ones. We call on law enforcement to strengthen their efforts in fighting crime and violence within our communities.
“This violent crime takes place just a day after two young men from Khuma lost their lives shortly after delivering their memorandum of demands to the speaker on behalf of the municipality. Our communities are not safe, and we need the rule of law to reign supreme.”
Investigation
Police have appealed to members of the public to come forward with any information that may assist in the investigation.
Further details regarding funeral arrangements would be communicated in due course, said Matlosana municipal spokesperson, Ntswaki Makgetha.
The killing has sparked frustration and fear among residents, with some raising concerns about the safety of senior political officials.
“Truth must be told, being an ANC member, especially in senior positions, is the same as being on death row, you should expect to be executed at any moment.”
“Condolences to the family of the deceased its really sad we are even afraid to voice our views,” said Thabo Kone in a comment on social media.
Another resident, Regi Moahloli, described Sello as a humble leader who was loved by the community he served as ward councillor.
