The accused in the murder of a North West ANC councillor has provisionally abandoned his bail application during his second court appearance.
Thapelo Apache Thejane (35) appeared before the Klerksdorp Magistrate’s Court on Monday (23/2) in connection with the fatal stabbing of ANC Matlosana ward councillor Molefi Sello (46). He reportedly handed himself over to police following the incident and has remained in custody.
Police were called to the scene after reports of a violent altercation on 13 February outside a tavern in Voortrekker Street in the Klerksdorp CBD.
“Upon arrival at the scene, police found the body of (Sello), lying on the ground with a stab wound on the neck,” said North West police spokesperson Col. Adéle Myburgh.
Paramedics declared Sello dead on the scene. His death has sent shockwaves through the local community and party structures. Members of the ANC Women’s League, alongside community members, attended the court proceedings in support of the victim’s family.
Gladys Maphazi, an ANC Women’s League member in the Kenneth Kaunda district, expressed satisfaction with the developments in court.
