Bloemfontein residents need to take note of road closures for the memorial service of the Free State’s first premier.
A memorial service for Cope co-founder Mosiua “Terror” Lekota will take place in the City Hall in Bloemfontein on Thursday (12/3) at noon. Numerous speakers will pay tribute to the veteran freedom fighter and former minister of defence, including businessman, politician, and anti-apartheid activist Tokyo Sexwale, who will honour his fellow Robben Island prisoner.
The president has accorded Lekota a special official funeral (category 2) in recognition of his contribution to South Africa’s struggle for freedom and democracy. The service will include ceremonial elements provided by the police.
Such a funeral is reserved for distinguished individuals who have made significant contributions to the nation and are specifically designated by the president.

Parking will be reserved from 06:00 in De Villiers and Charles Streets and Nelson Mandela Drive. On Friday, Britz Road next to the St Rose Roman Catholic church in Bochabela from 15:00 until the church service concludes.
Mangaung metro warned Park Road, from Parffit Road to Ella Street, will be completely closed from 06:00 until the funeral service concludes. Motorists are advised to use alternative routes.
The funeral service is set to take place on Saturday at the Old Grey Sports Grounds near the tourism centre from 08:00 until 12:00.
Meanwhile, tributes continue to pour in for Lekota, widely described as a dedicated freedom fighter who devoted his life to serving the people.
Matshediso Setai, speaking in her personal capacity as his first cousin, described him as someone who intentionally spent quality time with both his immediate and extended family members, whom he loved dearly.
Lekota always shared words of wisdom with the younger generation whenever the opportunity arose, said Setai, a broadcast media commentator, developmental communications specialist and integrated communications and media marketing professional.

“The life of a freedom fighter who paid the ultimate price by sacrificing his personal life for the liberation of his people was Mosiuoa Lekota’s albatross, which he carried with conviction to his final days.
“Today, his illustrious journey is being celebrated and recognised through a state funeral that honours his lifelong dedication to a just cause. The annals of history shall certainly not leave any blank pages when recording his remarkable contribution,” Setai said.
Meanwhile, at a memorial service held in Gauteng on Wednesday, ANC deputy secretary-general Nomvula Mokonyane hinted at possible reconciliation talks between the ANC and Cope after Lekota’s funeral.
