The 2026 Sasol New Signatures Visual Arts Competition has officially launched, inviting emerging artists from all provinces to enter the country’s longest running art contest.

This competition, which began in the 1960s, serves as a primary platform for South Africans looking to enter the professional art world. Artists from all provinces are invited to submit their original artworks for a chance to win various prizes and gain industry recognition.

The competition is open to artists who have not yet held a solo exhibition, unless the exhibition was required for a university degree. Additionally, artists already represented by an established gallery or agent may not enter, as the focus is on discovering new talent.

“This competition is for emerging artists who are looking to become professionals,” said Sasol New Signatures Competition chairperson Pfunzo Sidogi.

Submission details and locations

Artists must deliver their work to designated collection points on 9 and 10 June.

The organisers provide digital resources, including tips and advice, via their website and social media platforms, said Sidogi. These resources help artists understand specific requirements for size, weight, and competition rules.

Please download and complete the detailed entry forms by the June deadline to ensure participants meet all regulations.

The competition continues to be sponsored by Sasol, a partnership that has lasted for 36 years. This support ensures the entry process remains accessible to all emerging creators regardless of their financial background.

“There aren’t any special ingredients in terms of what it takes to create a winning artwork,” said Sidogi.

Artworks may include paintings, drawings, sculptures, or photography, provided they represent the honest vision of the creator and their surrounding environment.

The final exhibition, featuring the top selected pieces, will run from September to November. This event will conclude with the announcement of the winner, who will follow in the footsteps of many established professionals who began their careers through this national platform.

“As long as you are telling your own unique story, that will honestly put you in the best position possible,” says Sidogi.
