Kimberley set to host 6th annual human rights half-marathon─── REFILWE BEKANE 15:00 Thu, 19 Mar 2026
The Teemaneng Running Club is set to host the sixth annual Phakamile Mabija human rights half-marathon in Kimberley, an event that serves as a tribute to the life and legacy of Phakamile Mabija.
The half marathon takes place on Saturday (21/3). Runners can participate in the 21km race starting at 06:30, a 10km race five minutes later, and a 5km fun run another five minutes thereafter.
All finishers will be rewarded with medals based on their specific completion times, while competitive runners can compete for prize money available to the top three finishers and category winners in both the 10km and 21km events.
“We’re bringing in a couple of elites so that they can encourage and test our development runners or developing runners in and around Kimberley,” said half-marathon race director Pulane Pharasi.
Organisers are hoping to host 1,000 runners for this event, a goal that would double the previous year’s attendance. While the 5km and 10km categories are already sold out, registration for the 21km race remains open online via the Peak Timing website until Thursday (19/3).
To ensure a seamless and safe experience, the route will be equipped with multiple hydration points, while traffic officials, marshals, and emergency services will be stationed across all distances and at the finishing line to protect participants.

While the 5km and 10km categories are already sold out, registration for the 21km race remains open online via the Peak Timing website until Thursday (19/3).
These measures aim to ensure the safety of all participants during the competition. Pharasi encouraged participants to not only enjoy the race but to take the opportunity to learn more about the history and legacy behind the event.
Everyone’s invited to fully experience the event, viewing it as a moment of both athletic achievement and reflection on human rights. “It’s a milestone for us as Teemaneng Running Club and obviously for Kimberley.”
The race, supported by several sponsors, emphasised social running, community health, and local tourism. “We want the community to come together, live healthily, be part of the community, the running community, and socialise during these races,” said Pharasi.
