Free State police officer allegedly kills girlfriend’s relatives before taking own life─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 10:07 Sun, 07 Jun 2026
A Free State police officer has allegedly shot and killed three members of his girlfriend’s family before taking his own life in a tragic incident near Hennenman.
The police officer, 47, stationed in Hennenman as a rural safety coordinator, allegedly shot five people, resulting in three fatalities and two injuries, before turning the firearm on himself. He reported for duty on Saturday (6/6) at 16:00. On Sunday, at approximately 00:30, the officer allegedly drove to Whittes Plot near Hennenman in search of his girlfriend.
After failing to locate her, the officer and the girlfriend’s uncle reportedly proceeded to another location where the uncle indicated an event was taking place and several family members were in attendance.
‘Three people were killed ’
Upon arrival at the place, and after being informed the girlfriend was not there, an argument allegedly ensued, during which the member allegedly opened fire, said Free State police spokesperson Brig. Thandi Mbambo. Three people were killed during the shooting.
“The girlfriend’s mother, her uncle, and a 25-year-old woman were declared dead at the scene. Two other victims sustained gunshot wounds. One was transported to a local hospital for medical treatment, while the other sustained a graze wound and was treated at the scene.”
It is further alleged after the shooting, the member returned to the vehicle and shot himself. The motive for the incident is currently unknown and remains the subject of an ongoing investigation.
The provincial commissioner of the Free State, Lt. Gen. Thabang Lesia, strongly condemned the incident.
“This is a deeply disturbing and senseless incident that has left several families devastated. On behalf of the South African Police Service in the Free State, I extend my heartfelt condolences to the families and loved ones of those who lost their lives and wish the injured victims a speedy recovery.”
“While the circumstances surrounding this tragedy remain under investigation, there can be no justification for such conduct. The police in the Free State remain committed to accountability and to upholding the highest standards of professionalism, discipline, and integrity among its members,” said Lesia.
Mbambo confirmed the matter has been referred to the Independent Police Investigative Directorate for further investigation.
