Motorists were urged on Monday morning (23/3) to avoid the N12 near Alabama Circle outside Orkney as taxi protests continue to disrupt traffic across parts of North West.

Earlier, commuters travelling to and within Klerksdorp were alerted to multiple road closures caused by blockades staged by taxi operators. The protest action is reportedly linked to grievances over illegal taxi operations.

Among the roads affected are the R503, which connects Hartbeesfontein and Tigane to Klerksdorp, and the R30 on the opposite end leading toward Orkney. Several internal routes have also been obstructed, severely impacting traffic flow.

North West police spokesperson Capt. Majang Skalkie confirmed major routes in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda district have been closed. Law enforcement agencies, including the public order policing unit, have been deployed to monitor the situation and maintain safety for residents and road users.

Authorities are urging people to remain calm, calling on all parties to seek peaceful resolutions. Residents have been advised to avoid affected areas where possible and cooperate fully with law enforcement officials. Motorists are strongly encouraged to use alternative routes until the situation stabilises.

The North West department of community safety and transport management said engagements with protesting taxi operators are underway, involving law enforcement and other stakeholders.

Reports from the Klerksdorp Record suggest that truck drivers may have been held at blockade points against their will since late last night, between 23:00 and midnight.

Police said no formal criminal cases have yet been opened. This morning, along the Vaal Reefs road, tensions escalated when a truck driver allegedly attempted to bypass a blockade.

The situation turned violent, resulting in a physical confrontation and significant damage to several taxis. Although the matter was reported to Orkney police, no official case has been registered.

The protest continues, with no indication yet of when affected roads will reopen. Authorities are monitoring developments as efforts to resolve the dispute continue.
