Phuthaditjhaba police are offering multiple rewards for assistance with information that may lead to the arrest of suspects linked to several unresolved murders between 2024 and 2026.
The murder and robbery unit based in Phuthaditjhaba has appealed to the community for assistance in the murder of Khehla Sithole, 59, a taxi owner of Majakathata Taxi Association, who was allegedly shot and killed in his vehicle. They are offering a reward of R25,000.
Sithole was allegedly sitting inside his driving school vehicle when two unknown men approached him, pretending to enquire about driving lesson prices in August 2024. One of them allegedly shot him several times before fleeing the scene in a Toyota Yaris.
Police are offering a reward of up to R50,000 for information leading to arrests in the double murder of Melefe Mokoena, 69, and Seeko Matshidiso,16. They were shot while travelling in a white Isuzu KB bakkie from Elizabeth Ross Hospital to Katlehong Village, Namahadi, in 2024.
“The Free State murder and robbery unit based in Phuthaditjhaba is requesting information from the community in respect to the murder that took place in QwaQwa between 2024 and 2026,” said Free State police spokesperson Mmako Mophiring.
This is where some of the taxi chairpersons were shot and killed. Police have requested information from the community, and the service has already approved rewards of up to R50,000.
Police are still searching for suspects linked to the murder of a DA councillor, Moshe Lefuma,40, and his mother, Dinah Monehi, 61, who were shot and killed by two unknown suspects.
In November 2024, Monehi was at home with her sons when two unknown men walked inside the house and asked about her eldest son, Moshe, who was asleep in one of the bedrooms.
Despite being questioned why they were looking for him, they proceeded straight into his bedroom. She followed them. The next moment, the youngest son heard gunshots and ran from the house.
The unit is also offering a reward of up to R50,000 for information leading to arrests for the murder of Matshediso Nteo,57, who was also the chairperson of Qwauta Taxi Association. She was allegedly shot and killed at her home by unknown suspects.
Police have been searching for four suspects following the fatal shooting of Nteo. They said the killing may be linked to her role in the taxi industry. Nteo was recently elected as the chairperson of the Qwauta Association within the taxi industry.
