The North West education department is mourning the death of a Grade 12 learner who died in a car accident this weekend.

A group of learners was travelling in a bakkie when it collided with a water tank on the side of the road at Tshuenyane village, outside Mahikeng, on Saturday (2/5).

Six learners were on their way from school to their homes in Vryhof village. The driver allegedly lost control of the vehicle, causing it to crash into the water tank near Mantsha, where Mosikare Secondary School is located.

One learner died while the other five sustained injuries and were transported to the hospital: one to Victoria and the other four to Bophelong hospital, said North West education spokesperson Vuyo Mantshule. The accident happened after camp session around 15:00, and the staff was notified around 17:00, he added.

Last month, Remofiloe Mtshengu, Kitso Mathope and Enica Mambela from Vryburg High School were laid to rest after they died in an accident while travelling to school from Delareyville.

North West education MEC Viola Motsumi has urged drivers transporting learners to exercise extreme caution on the roads.

“I wish to convey my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and extend my wishes for a speedy recovery to the injured learners of Mosikare Secondary School.

“It is deeply concerning that the department continues to lose learners due to reckless driving on our roads. I therefore call on all drivers responsible for transporting learners to prioritise safety at all times. The loss of even one learner’s life is one too many.”

Meanwhile, district officials and school management are expected to meet with Grade 12 learners and the parents of those involved in the accident on Monday (4/5) to provide support.
