An Upington child and youth care centre says its biggest need this winter is warm clothing, new linen for the children’s beds, and warm blankets, among other things.

Jogébed Child and Youth Care Centre area coordinator Marianna van der Westhuizen said the home caters to 18 children, ranging from newborns to teenagers. Institutions like these are the beneficiaries of The BIG Cover Up on Central South Africa’s OFM Sound of Your Life, returning to the airwaves on Wednesday (3/6).

The winter blanket drive is back for a second consecutive year, and listeners and businesses are encouraged to tune in on Wednesday from 06:00 to 18:00 and make a contribution.

OFM, in partnership with Round Table Southern Africa, aims to raise R200,000 in cash donations to assist NGOs in providing blankets and food to older persons and children, who are among those most affected by the harsh winter cold.

Listeners are invited to support The Big Cover Up initiative by donating to provide much-needed relief to vulnerable children and elderly people across Central South Africa.

“We currently have 12 babies admitted to the home aged between newborn and three years,” said Van der Westhuizen. “The needs at the baby home consist of nappies and toiletries for the babies, formula milk, fresh vegetables and chicken for the toddlers in the house, porridge and snacks, cleaning materials, and educational toys.

“Over the years, we have made a difference in the lives of 308 babies. The needs at the foster home consist of groceries, snacks, school supplies, new linens for the children’s beds, warm blankets, and warm clothing.”

Funds raised will be distributed to NGOs assisting communities most severely affected by the winter cold.

Last year, the campaign managed to raise R295,000 in much-needed winter aid for Central South Africa. It aimed to raise R150,000 in cash donations to help NGOs provide blankets and food to older people and children.

“The need for blankets and warm clothing increases every year,” said OFM sales and marketing manager Anchen Lintvelt. “Together, we can make a difference in the lives of children and the elderly who need it most.

“The Big Cover Up is not just aimed at covering Central South Africa with blankets, but also at warming the hearts of those who will be receiving the donations.”

In collaboration with Round Table Southern Africa, OFM will identify NGOs within local communities through regional Round Tables. These partner organisations will ensure that funds are used to purchase and distribute essential winter relief where it is needed most.
