Bloemfontein residents may soon be able to enjoy the city’s most valued green spaces as a coordinated operation seeks to remove illegal squatters from Reservoir Island and Happy Valley.

A large-scale security operation to remove illegal squatters and their structures from the wooded areas of Reservoir Island and Happy Valley was conducted on Wednesday (10/6). The operation forms part of a broader vision to restore public confidence in the green belts while safeguarding critical infrastructure and local biodiversity.

The operation was led by the Westdene Neighbourhood Association and supported by several security companies and various divisions of the police, while officials from Mangaung metro law enforcement also participated.

The initiative forms part of ongoing efforts to improve safety in Westdene and neighbouring suburbs while protecting environmentally sensitive areas in the newly established Westdene Park Conservancy.

“This multi-dimensional operation is aimed at removing illegal squatters who have occupied these areas for many years,” said Westdene Neighbourhood Association general manager Michael Deutschmann.

“We have also seen recent damage to critical infrastructure, including a major water pipe, which has affected supply to Westdene and the city centre, and this must be prevented.

“The Westdene Park Conservancy was created to secure these green belt areas and make them safe for visitors while protecting our natural environment. We intend to protect the local flora and fauna and ensure that these green spaces are preserved for the benefit of the entire community.”

Meanwhile, additional security measures are set to be introduced at the Signal Hill Reservoir following vandalism that left several Mangaung residents facing water supply challenges.

The latest incident has once again highlighted the vulnerability of critical water infrastructure in the metro. Repeated acts of vandalism and suspected tampering continue to disrupt essential services.

Residents of Phomolong, Lourierpark, Phase 2 and Brandpark were specifically urged to help safeguard critical infrastructure following disruptions to the water supply in their areas.

Other parts of Mangaung also experienced water shortages due to suspected tampering and vandalism affecting essential water infrastructure.

Acting Metro spokesperson Nicolette Maysiels said interventions, including the introduction of additional security measures, would be implemented to reduce the risk of future incidents at the Signal Hill Reservoir.
