A collision involving a truck and a bakkie on the N3 between Vrede and Warden in the Free State has claimed three lives and left two others injured.

Emergency services were called on Friday (12/6) at approximately 18:05 following reports of a serious crash on this busy route. Free State Road Incident Management Systems chairperson Sipho Towa confirmed three people died at the scene.

One patient sustained moderate injuries while another suffered minor injuries. Both patients were stabilised by EMS personnel and transported to Thebe Hospital in Harrismith.

The circumstances surrounding the collision are expected to form part of an investigation by authorities. Towa extended condolences to the families affected by the tragedy.

“Our deepest sympathy and condolences are extended to the families, friends, and loved ones of those who lost their lives at the scene.”

Motorists travelling on the N3 between Vrede and Warden were urged to exercise caution while emergency personnel and law enforcement officials attended to the scene.

Road users were advised to reduce speed and comply with all instructions from traffic officers to ensure safe passage through the affected area.

The crash comes as road safety authorities continue to warn motorists about the dangers associated with winter driving conditions.

Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) spokesperson Simon Zwane urged motorists to be extra vigilant during the colder months, particularly when driving at night or in areas affected by poor visibility.

“As the winter season has started, the RTMC advises motorists to consider fog and mist conditions when driving at night and approaching stop intersections. If the fog becomes too thick to drive safely, we advise motorists to pull into designated safe locations,” said Zwane.

Authorities have once again appealed to motorists to adjust their driving behaviour according to weather conditions, maintain safe following distances and avoid unnecessary risks on the roads during winter.
