Residents of the Free State have been urged to take responsibility for building inclusive communities where people living with albinism and persons with disabilities are not hidden, excluded or discriminated against.

Free State social development MEC Mathabo Hlalele made the call as the province commemorated International Albinism Awareness Day ahead of its global observance on Saturday (13/6).

Speaking at an event held at Ferdie Meyer Hall in Welkom on Friday, Hlalele highlighted both the progress made in promoting the dignity and inclusion of people living with albinism and the challenges that continue to affect their daily lives.

Free State social development spokesperson Thembile Nqabeni said the event focused strongly on the realities faced by many families, particularly limited access to essential items such as sunscreen.

The government acknowledged sunscreen is not a luxury for people living with albinism but a critical healthcare necessity that protects them from harmful exposure to the sun.

Hlalele urged communities across the province to play an active role in creating environments where people living with albinism can participate fully and equally in society.

She encouraged families to support the inclusion of people living with albinism and disabilities in schools, workplaces, and community activities, while reaffirming the provincial government’s commitment to delivering services that are accessible, fair, and responsive to the needs of all residents.

A key undertaking announced during the event was strengthened collaboration with the department of health to ensure the consistent provision of sunscreen and other essential healthcare support for people living with albinism.

Hlalele also encouraged people living with albinism to embrace their identity with confidence and participate fully in society without fear of stigma or discrimination. She reminded communities dignity, respect, and equality should guide the way every individual is treated.

Nqabeni said initiatives are planned to promote inclusion and celebrate the achievements of people living with disabilities and albinism.

“A talent showcase will also be organised during Disability Rights Awareness Month, providing a platform for people living with disabilities and albinism to present their talents, innovations, and business ideas.

Awareness

The initiative is intended to highlight their contribution to the province’s social and economic development," said Nqabeni.

The event formed part of ongoing efforts by the provincial government to raise awareness about the rights of people living with albinism and to encourage communities to create a more inclusive and supportive society for all.
