Free State police are calling on communities, parents, educators and caregivers to play a more active role in safeguarding children from abuse, neglect and exploitation.

While significant strides have been made in prosecuting offenders, growing concerns around social media predators, substance abuse and a lack of parental supervision continue to place children at risk across the province, police said.

A warning has been issued to perpetrators who target children, with police vowing that offenders will be tracked down, prosecuted, and sentenced.

The Free State’s family violence, child protection and sexual (FCS) offences unit said hundreds of convictions, including dozens of life sentences, were secured over the past year, demonstrating there are serious consequences for those who commit crimes against children and vulnerable victims.

The unit is responsible for investigating all sexual offences regardless of the victim’s age or gender, family violence matters, child abuse and neglect cases, as well as specialised electronic investigations involving child pornography and serial sexual offenders.

“The protection of children is everybody’s business,” said Free State FCS unit head Brig. Herna Els. “It should not only be observed during Child Protection Week or Child Protection Month. Every child needs protection 365 days a year.

“Social media platforms have become a significant tool used by predators to target children and teenagers. There are several cases where adults created false online identities to gain the trust of minors before exploiting them.

“We have seen instances where minors form relationships with people they meet online and are eventually persuaded to travel, meet in secret, or engage in harmful activities. Social media definitely plays a major role in the victimisation of our youth.”

Els also highlighted substance abuse as a growing concern among young people, saying alcohol and drugs often leave children vulnerable to exploitation and criminal behaviour. Despite these challenges, she praised communities, teachers, and parents who remain vigilant and report suspected abuse.

‘The FCS unit has achieved success in securing convictions
against offenders’

The FCS unit has achieved significant success in securing convictions against offenders. Between the start of the financial year and the end of May, the unit secured 706 convictions, including 86 life sentences and 61 sentences exceeding 20 years imprisonment.

“Offenders often underestimate the consequences of sexual crimes,” said Els. “Eventually, we will catch you. You will be prosecuted and sentenced. There is justice, and there is always hope for victims.”
