The municipality has repaired thousands of potholes and set aside millions of rand for further infrastructure upgrades. In July, road maintenance teams repaired a total of 2,597 potholes across the municipality, achieving a weekly closure rate of 89% to 93% of all identified potholes.

The municipality’s water department also supported the effort by repairing all identified water-related potholes, successfully addressing 430 during the month.

‘Steadily winning the war on potholes’

Road maintenance also extended the municipality’s gravel road network, with grading teams regravelling more than 19km of roads in July.

“Midvaal is steadily winning the war on potholes, and we will continue investing in safer, more reliable road infrastructure for residents across the municipality,” said Midvaal mayoral spokesperson Idah Satikhe.

“The rehabilitation of Boundary Road and the completion of repairs on Corrie Pypers Road demonstrate our commitment to restoring and maintaining critical road infrastructure.

“The rehabilitation has since been completed, and the road has reopened to traffic. The latest road maintenance efforts form part of a broader investment in infrastructure.”

During the 2026 state of the municipality address in June, mayor Peter Teixeira announced that Midvaal would invest more than R41m in road infrastructure during the 2026/27 financial year.

The new budget, which came into effect on 1 July, prioritises the upgrading of several gravel roads to tarred roads, including multiple roads earmarked for upgrades in Sicelo.

Teixeira said the latest allocation builds on more than R190m spent on road infrastructure over the past five financial years. “As we look ahead, we remain committed to strengthening and expanding our road network.

“Our achievements are not measured by promises made, but by promises kept. From roads and water infrastructure to public safety, housing and community development, we have remained committed to improving the quality of life of every resident.”

During that period, the municipality rehabilitated and resurfaced key roads, upgraded gravel roads to tar, repaired thousands of potholes and expanded stormwater infrastructure.

Between January and May this year, more than 12,700 potholes covering over 10,800m² of road surface were repaired across Meyerton, Henley-on-Klip, Walkerville, Riversdale, De Deur, Golf Park, Kookrus, Meyerton Farms and Sicelo.
