The Midvaal municipality will invest more than R41m in road infrastructure in the 2026/27 financial year.

Executive Mayor Alderman Peter Teixeira made the announcement during his 2026 State of the Municipality Address on Thursday (25/6), where he reflected on the municipality’s achievements over the past five years under the theme “A Legacy of Service, A Future of Progress.”

The new budget, which comes into effect on Wednesday (1/7), will prioritise the upgrading of several gravel roads to tarred roads. In Sicelo, multiple roads have been earmarked for upgrades.

The mayor said the latest investment builds on more than R190m spent on road infrastructure over the past five financial years. During that period, the municipality rehabilitated and resurfaced key roads, upgraded gravel roads to tar, repaired thousands of potholes, and expanded stormwater infrastructure.

Between January and May this year, more than 12,700 potholes covering over 10,800m² of road surface were repaired across Meyerton, Henley-on-Klip, Walkerville, Riversdale, De Deur, Golf Park, Kookrus, Meyerton Farms and Sicelo.

“As we look ahead, we remain committed to strengthening and expanding our road network,” said Teixeira. “A budget of more than R41m has been allocated towards road infrastructure for the 2026/27 financial year to improve mobility, support economic activity, and connect our communities.

“At a time when many municipalities across South Africa are facing serious financial challenges, Midvaal has consistently adopted fully funded budgets, maintained clean governance, and protected every ratepayer’s rand through responsible financial management.

“Our achievements are not measured by promises made, but by promises kept. From roads and water infrastructure to public safety, housing, and community development, we have remained committed to improving the quality of life of every resident.”

Beyond roads, Teixeira highlighted the municipality’s broader achievements since taking office in 2021.

He said Midvaal had consistently adopted fully funded budgets, maintained twelve consecutive clean audits, and remained one of only two municipalities in Gauteng without outstanding debt to Eskom or Rand Water.

‘Midvaal is open for business’

The municipality also received recognition as South Africa’s most financially sustainable municipality for three consecutive years and was named Gauteng’s Best Performing Municipality in 2025.

The mayor added that investments in infrastructure had extended beyond roads to include electricity, water and sanitation projects, community safety, housing, parks, libraries, and sports facilities.

“Our approach is simple: Midvaal is open for business,” said Teixeira.
