The 15-year-old had allegedly been involved in a disagreement with another learner the previous week. The two reportedly encountered each other in the township outside the school, where the victim was stabbed.

Residents took the learner to Letlhabile Clinic, where he was declared dead. Police received a complaint from the clinic on Tuesday morning (25/8) after he was brought in with multiple stab wounds.

North West police spokesperson Sergeant Kelebogile Morake said the learner was subsequently identified by his mother. Preliminary investigations indicate he had allegedly been involved in a confrontation with a 19-year-old known to him. 

The circumstances surrounding the confrontation remain under investigation. The suspect was traced and arrested in Letlhabile. He also sustained injuries during the incident and is receiving medical treatment. He is expected to appear in the Brits Magistrate’s Court on Thursday (27/8) on a murder charge.

North West education MEC Dr Desbo Mohono condemned the killing and expressed condolences to the learner’s family, friends, classmates, educators, and the wider Ikatisong Secondary School community.

“We are deeply saddened by the tragic loss of a young life. Our thoughts and prayers are with the Mokhele family during this painful time. Violence has no place in our schools or communities. We urge learners to resolve disagreements peacefully and to seek assistance from parents, educators or school management when faced with conflict or threats.”

Mohono also called on community members to cooperate with police and provide information that could assist the investigation. “We must work together to protect our children and prevent further loss of young lives.”

The North West department of education will provide psychosocial support to affected learners, educators, and family members. It will also engage the school and other stakeholders on interventions aimed at challenges affecting learners.

Education spokesperson Mercy Mokgatle appealed for calm while police investigate the circumstances surrounding the killing. Police have urged anyone with information to contact the investigating officer or their nearest police station.
