Provincial police commissioner Lt. Gen. Thabang Lesia released the latest provincial crime statistics on Tuesday (1/9), covering the first quarter of 2026/27. He said the sentences demonstrate the commitment of investigators and prosecutors to ensuring perpetrators face the full might of the law.

During the first quarter, 14 people convicted of rape received life sentences. A further eight perpetrators were sentenced to between 20 and 30 years’ imprisonment, while 28 received sentences ranging from ten to 29 years, and 80 convictions resulted in sentences of between one and nine years’ imprisonment.

“These convictions demonstrate the commitment of police and prosecutors to ensuring that perpetrators of gender-based violence face justice.”

Lesia highlighted several cases involving children, family members, and intimate partners, where perpetrators allegedly abused positions of power and trust.

“These cases remind us of the devastating reality of gender-based violence, particularly when children and family members are victims and perpetrators abuse positions of power and trust.

“Our family violence, child protection and sexual offences units, together with the National Prosecuting Authority, continue to pursue perpetrators and ensure that they experience the full might of the law.

“Most cases of rape unfortunately take place in homes. We cannot place a police officer in every home, but we can make sure there is someone who responds and investigates these horrific crimes.

“Behind every statistic is a person, a family, and a community. These cases demonstrate the courage, persistence, and dedication required to root out gender-based violence in the province.”

Lesia highlighted the case of Moeketi Mofokeng, 38, from Bohlokong near Bethlehem, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in April for raping a girl, 16.

Another case involved Barend van der Berg, 84, from Petrusburg, who was sentenced to life imprisonment in August for raping an eight-year-old in 2023 and 2024. Lesia said these cases illustrate the devastating reality of GBV, particularly where perpetrators abuse positions of power and trust within families and relationships.

The latest crime statistics showed that sexual offences detected as a result of police action increased by 11.7% during the fourth quarter of the 2025/26 financial year. Overall sexual offences increased by 1.4%, while reported rape cases remained unchanged.
