The police officers have been commended for their swift response and compassion after assisting a suspect who went into labour while in police custody at Assen police station.

The officers reportedly helped the woman deliver a healthy baby girl at the police station before the mother and newborn were transported to a medical facility for further assessment and care on Thursday (8/10).

North West police spokesperson Sgt Kelebogile Morake said officers were on duty at Assen police station under the command of Sgt Chidi when they received a telephone call concerning the arrest of a female suspect at Msholozi informal settlement in Kameeldrift.

“Constable Olivier and Constable Mokhutshoane responded to the call and arrested the suspect, who was reportedly in good health and had no visible injuries at the time of the arrest.”

While at the police station, the woman began experiencing labour pains, prompting officers to summon an ambulance. In the meantime, police members assisted her during childbirth, with guidance from Marijke van der Walt, an 80-year-old resident, who was present to offer assistance while they awaited the ambulance.

“At approximately 16:15, the woman gave birth to a healthy baby girl at the Assen SAPS Community Service Centre. The ambulance arrived shortly thereafter.”

The incident drew praise from North West provincial commissioner Lt.Gen. Arthur Peter Adams, who commended the officers for their swift response, professionalism and compassion during the emergency.

Adams said the officers’ actions reflected the values of the South African Police Service and demonstrated their commitment to protecting and serving all members of the community, including those in vulnerable circumstances.
