Free State police have intensified their search efforts for a missing Welkom teacher.

Gert Adams, 55, reportedly went missing under mysterious circumstances. On Sunday, 4 October, at approximately 23:30, Adams was reportedly forcefully taken by unknown suspects.

Before the abduction, he managed to call his wife, but the call was abruptly ended, and he has not been heard from since. A grey Hyundai iX35 belonging to Adams was found abandoned in Klippan, Welkom, two days later.

“The victim’s cellphone and other items were reportedly found inside the vehicle. The vehicle was recovered, but Adams remains missing,” said Free State police spokesperson Sgt Palesa Thabane.

Police are investigating a case of alleged carjacking and kidnapping. “The motive for the kidnapping remains unclear at this stage. The search for the victim and the possible suspects is part of ongoing investigations.”

Police are appealing to anyone with information that could assist with investigations to come forward or contact Det. Sgt Tsie Matlokotsi of Welkom serious and violent crimes on 078 758 5658.

In 2023, five suspects were arrested after two were found in possession of a vehicle belonging to a missing Central University of Technology lecturer, Kgatliso Edwin Makgetla.

The suspects were apprehended after an extensive search that included cooperation with authorities in Lesotho, where two suspects were detained. It was revealed that Makgetla had been hijacked, kidnapped, and his vehicle sold to the suspects.

Meanwhile, the body of a Bainsvlei Combined School teacher was discovered at South Park Cemetery in Bloemfontein.

OFM News reported shocking pictures of the body of Khethiwe Nkambule, 48, were shared on social media platforms. A murder case was opened at the Kagisanong police station.
