North West matric exams start smoothly as province targets top two─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:57 Tue, 13 Oct 2026
The 2026 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examinations have started without incident in North West, where the education department hopes to improve the province’s national ranking from fourth place to a top-two position.
More than 52,000 learners are expected to write their final matric examinations across the province. The examination period started on Tuesday (13/10) with Computer Applications Technology (Cat) Paper 1.
Acting North West education MEC Kenetswe Mosenogi monitored the first day at Malatse Motsepe Secondary School in Mmakau village, about 12km east of Brits.
The department says the examinations started on a positive note. Learners observed examination regulations, while question papers were delivered securely, sealed, and on time.
Support from educators and school management will continue throughout the examination period to help learners prepare properly and perform as well as possible.
Malatse Motsepe Secondary School achieved an 89% matric pass rate in 2025 and is targeting more than 95% this year. Additional support includes extra classes, learning camps for learners who need further assistance, and supplementary learning material, which the department believes can help the school reach its target.
North West recorded an overall matric pass rate of 88.49% in 2025, placing fourth nationally. This was an improvement of 0.99 percentage points from 87.5% in 2024. The province now hopes the Class of 2026 can help lift North West into the country’s top two when the final results are released.
Preparations for the examination period included readying centres, deploying personnel, and coordinating other arrangements needed to ensure the examinations are administered smoothly and credibly. A larger group of candidates is expected to write English Paper 3 on Thursday as the examination programme gathers pace across the province.
Parents, teachers, communities, and other education stakeholders are being urged to continue supporting learners throughout the examination period.
The department says creating calm and supportive conditions for studying and revision will remain important as candidates work through the rest of the examination timetable.
