Condolences continue to pour in for DA councillor Thulani Mbana, who was gunned down at his home in Sasolburg on Monday evening (26/10).
Two unidentified men reportedly shot Mbana several times at close range at his home in Taylor Park, Zamdela, around 21:40. His death has sent shock waves through the Fezile Dabi municipal district, particularly as preparations are under way for the local government elections on 4 November.
Mbana served as the DA caucus leader in Metsimaholo and the party’s Ward 14 candidate. He previously served as MMC for spatial planning and human settlements, contributing to the municipality’s efforts to address development priorities and the needs of local communities.
Metsimaholo mayor Jack Malindi expressed his condolences, describing Mbana’s death as a devastating loss to the municipality and the community. His untimely death had left those who worked with him deeply shaken and saddened.
Municipal spokesperson Gino Albert said Mbana had occupied an important position in local government, where he was entrusted with representing residents and advocating for their interests.
“Throughout his service Cllr Mbana occupied an important position in local government, where he was entrusted with presenting residents and advocating for their interests. His passing is a painful loss to those who worked alongside him and to the communities whose concerns he sought to advance,” said Albert.
“The life of Cllr Mbana’s untimely death left us deeply shaken and saddened. It is heart breaking that a life dedicated to public service has been cut short in such tragic circumstances. Cllr Mbana still had much to contribute to the people of Metsimaholo. Beyond his political responsibilities, he was a family member, a friend, and a leader whose loss will be felt by many.”
“At this profound difficult time, our thoughts are with his family, loved ones, political colleagues and everyone whose had the privilege of knowing and working with him. We extend our heartfelt condolences to the DA and all those mourning this devastating loss,” he added.
Meanwhile, DA provincial leader Dr Roy Jankielsohn described Mbana’s passing as a devastating loss to the party and the community he served.
He expressed appreciation for messages of condolence from Free State MEC for treasury Ketso Makhume, who conveyed condolences on behalf of the ANC, and Freedom Front Plus leader Jan van Niekerk.
Police have yet to establish the motive for the killing and have not confirmed whether it was politically motivated. Free State police spokesperson Brigadier Thandi Mbambo said all possible leads were being pursued as investigations continued.
