‘We will not tolerate the abuse of teachers’ – Maboya condemns alleged learner sexual misconduct─── KEKELETSO MOSEBETSI 11:40 Mon, 02 Nov 2026
Free State parents have been urged to play an active role in instilling discipline and respect among learners following an alleged sexual harassment incident involving a teacher at a primary school in Botshabelo.
The 32-year-old was allegedly sexually harassed and abused by a Grade 7 learner, 14, at Dibeng-sa-Tsebo Primary School. On Tuesday (27/10), the learner allegedly attempted to inappropriately touch the teacher, who acted swiftly to protect herself.
Free State Education spokesperson Howard Ndaba said the school management immediately placed both parties in separate safe spaces, informed the parents and reported the matter to the police. “A case has been opened and is under investigation. The educator has since reported being unwell and unable to report for duty. The department has provided psychosocial support to the affected educator.”
The matter was also reported to the school governing body and its disciplinary committee on Thursday. A formal disciplinary hearing for the learner had been scheduled at Dibeng-sa-Tsebo Primary School for Thursday at 09:00, Ndaba added.
Free State education MEC Julia Maboya strongly condemned the incident and called on parents to assist in disciplining children. “We will not tolerate the abuse of teachers in our schools. Our classrooms must be safe spaces for both learners and educators.
“An attack on a teacher is an attack on education itself. No teacher should go to school fearing for their safety and dignity. We stand firmly with her and all educators. Discipline, respect and protection of our teachers is non-negotiable.”
Maboya called on parents and communities to work with the department to instil discipline and respect among learners. The department remains commitment to implementing the code of conduct for learners and protecting educators in terms of the South African Schools Act and the Bela Act.
The incident comes after a teacher at Yakhisizwe Secondary School in Tumahole was suspended following allegations that he raped a learner. The department previously confirmed that the matter was under investigation and had been reported to the police.
