The Proteas will face Sri Lanka on Tuesday evening in Cape Town in the first of three T20 Internationals, and this will be a hugely important series from a South African perspective.

South Africa won the five-match One-Day International series and will look to continue that form in the shortest format of the game.

With just ten weeks to go before the ICC Cricket World Cup gets underway in England and Wales, this series is important for the Proteas.

The three T20’s will form a major of the Proteas preparation ahead of the global showpiece, while they will take on Sri Lanka and the West Indies in warm-up matches in England.

The Proteas coach, Ottis Gibson, that the players can still impress the selectors in the T20’s.

“I am not sure about the Indian Premier League (IPL), but playing in the T20 Internationals you still have an opportunity.

“As a selection panel, we have always looked at it sort of like a Ryder Cup selection and where the Ryder Cup captain as a wild card pick.

“So, there is still an opportunity for someone to come in, and if they do something unbelievable in the next couple of games, then there still an opportunity for the selector to consider that person.

Gibson conceded that he is also caught between a rock and a hard place somewhat, and they may have to select a player or two to go to the World Cup on reputation as opposed to current form.

“You'd want to pick on form, but if there is no form to go with then you have to look at reputation I guess.

“That's something that we will have to look at, obviously with regards to Hash (Hashim Amla), because he has not played any cricket for a long time now because of his family situation.

“When we sit down to discuss the team that will be one of the things we have to consider."

The first T20 International between South Africa and Sri Lanka and Newlands gets underway at 18:00.
