The interviews for the new VKB Knights head coach will be taking place on Wednesday in Bloemfontein.

The three shortlisted candidates which will be interviewed for the job by the board are the current interim coach, Alan Kruger, the title-winning former Highveld Lions coach, Geoffrey Toyana, and the current Proteas Women’s national coach, Hilton Moreeng.

Moreeng who was appointed by national women’s team in 2012 previously coached at the Free State.

The CEO of the Knights, Johan van Heerden, told OFM Sport that they have three very strong candidates, and he is glad that he personally doesn’t have to make the final decision.

“Think that we have three very strong candidates for the role, in Geoffrey Toyana, Hilton Moreeng and Alan Kruger.

“In Geoffrey, his record when he coached the Lions speaks for itself. I don’t think that Enoch Nkwe has done a bad job at the Lions at all, but Geoffrey did achieve over there.

“We have seen the upliftment in the Proteas women’s team since Hilton took over there, and Alan came in at the very difficult time to take over from Nicky Bojé when he left us.

“To come in midseason is a lot more difficult than starting from a fresh and I think that he has proven himself of late. The team was steering in one direction, and it was up to him to get them back on track, and he has done that.”

“I am not going to be on the panel for the interviews which start at 9 am on Wednesday morning, and I am glad that I don’t have to make that decision.”

Other candidates who applied for the job, however, weren’t shortlisted include the former Knights fast bowler, Quinton Friend, former Proteas greats, Makhaya Ntini and Paul Adams, the current Dolphins head coach, Grant Morgan and the former England international, Owais Shah.

The contract will only be for one-year. This due to Cricket South Africa not having made up their minds as to whether or not the franchise system will remain, or whether or not cricket in the country will revert back to the provincial system.
