The Proteas begin with their week-long training camp ahead of the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup when they assemble in Cape Town on Sunday.

The 15-man squad will spend a couple of days before heading to the High-Performance Centre at the University of Pretoria.

Earlier in the week, Anrich Nortje was ruled out with a fractured thumb, and he was replaced by Chris Morris.

There is still concern over the seamer Dale Steyn (shoulder) and Kagiso Rabada (back), who both picked up injuries while playing in the Indian Premier League. There are players who have been placed on standby in the event that neither will be fit in time for the global showpiece.

The team manager, Dr Mohammed Moosajee, indicated that the camp will be used for team building and fine-tuning.

“It is going to be a bit of both. We are assembling in Cape Town on Sunday, and the first three days will be more about team building and bonding.

“We fly out to Johannesburg on Wednesday evening, and there it will be more cricket specific training, the skills, the game plans, as well as middle and net practices.

“We will be based at the HPC (High-Performance Centre) in Pretoria.”

South Africa will face Sri Lanka and the West Indies in Cardiff and Bristol ahead of the opening match of the World Cup which will be against England at the Oval on 30 May.

Proteas squad - Faf du Plessis (captain), Hashim Amla, Quinton de Kock, JP Duminy, Aiden Markram, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Chris Morris, Andile Phehlukwayo, Dwaine Pretorius, Kagiso Rabada, Tabraiz Shamsi, Dale Steyn, Imran Tahir, Rassie van der Dussen.
