The Proteas goal for the next two games at the 2019 ICC Cricket World Cup is to beat Sri Lanka and Australia, albeit that they are staring down the barrel of two more defeats.

To date, the Proteas have lost five of their six matches at World Cup, while the game against the West Indies produced no results due to rain.

The only win was a 9 wicket victory against Afghanistan in Cardiff some two weeks ago.

South Africa has only won one match at the World Cup, and are out of the reckoning and the next two games are just a mere formality.

Questions were raised about the form and fitness of the squad. There were a couple of players injured before and during the World Cup, however, very few of the players displayed any form during the tournament.

The Cricket South Africa president threatened that heads will be rolling and rightly so. If coaches or players don’t deliver the goods, it’s time for them to make way.

While the head coach Ottis Gibson will in all likelihood feel the wrath of the governing body, the first to go should be the batting coach, Dale Benkenstein, who is far cry from his predecessor, Neil Mckenzie who now with Bangladesh.

Early in the tournament, Benkenstein, stated that he believes the batsmen are in good form, however, only seven half-centuries by the batsman and a top score of 68, paints a totally different picture.

The Proteas assistant coach, Malibongwe Maketa, says that the prospect of being axed comes with the territory, and they will accept the consequences.

"That's our profession. We all have to take collective responsibility and if heads do roll then we can say that we've given it our best shot," he said.

"We came here to win and it hasn't happened, so we are strong enough to make sure that we leave CSA stronger than we found it. It may not look like it now, but we are confident that the work that has been done has contributed to something.

"The reflection has been tough on all of us and we haven't performed as well as we would have liked. We have to suffer the consequences of that and we are willing to take responsibility.

"Hopefully we will be judged on more than what we have done here in a one-off competition."

South Africa face Sri Lanka on Friday at Chester-le-Street in Durham. This match is scheduled to get underway at 11:30.
