There was more bad news for Cricket South Africa on Thursday as the former Proteas batsman and captain, Graeme Smith, withdrew his interest in the governing bodies Director of Cricket position.

Smith, who is South Africa’s most successful captain to date, interviewed for the position along with the suspended interim Director of Cricket, Corrie van Zyl, and Hussein Manack who is a former national selector.

Earlier in the week, there were suggestions that Smith would only be interested in the position if he was given a guarantee that there will be no interference.

On Thursday Smith confirmed that he after his interview that he is not convinced that he will have the necessary freedom and support to implement the changes needed to get the sport in South Africa back on track.

Via a statement on social media Smith confirmed that he is no longer interested in the Director of Cricket role.

“Following the news in the media this week that I interviewed for the CSA Director of Cricket role, I feel it necessary to confirm that I have unfortunately withdrawn my interest in the role.

“I would love to have taken on the role. However, despite my obvious desire to make a difference during the long and, at times, frustrating process over the last ten or so weeks of discussions, I have not developed the necessary confidence that I would be given the level of freedom and support to initiate the initial changes.

“My passion for our nation’s cricketing fortunes remains steadfast and I give my heartfelt best wishes to whomever does take the role on. I will continue to support the teams and give advice and guidance wherever I can.”

The position is expected to be filled before the end of the month.
