The 2020 edition of the Indian Premier League will go ahead this year, albeit, that the start of the T20 tournament has been pushed back by more than two weeks. This decision comes due to the growing fears of the global COVID-19 outbreak.

There were calls for the tournament to either be called off totally or for the matches to be played behind closed doors.

The tournament was set to get underway on 29 March, however, the new date for the proceedings to get underway is 15 April.

This decision was taken by the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI).

Earlier it was reported that the tournament still had the green light, although it would be subject to adhering to adhered strict government guidelines and discouraging mass gatherings.

The ministry of foreign affairs in India advised against the tournament going ahead but ultimately left the decision with the organisers of the tournament.
