The ICC Hall of Famer and incoming VKB Knights coach, Allan Donald, has been voted as the greatest ever overseas player for the English County Cricket team, Warwickshire.

The Free State and Proteas great, won 48% of the vote to pit other players such as the West Indians batsmen, Brian Lara and Alvin Kallicharran to the title.

Donald’s finest season at the Bears was in 1995 when he took 89 country championship wickets at an average of 16.07 to lead Warwickshire to the title.

During the 1994 season, Lara famously scored 501* for Warwickshire in a county game against Durham at Edgbaston in Birmingham.

Kallicharran who scored 4399 Test runs for the West Indies also spent time in Bloemfontein, where he too played first-class cricket for the Free State.

The Bloemfontein-born Donald, who was famously known as White Lighting, said that he is humbled by the accolade.

“Extremely humbled to have been voted the Bears' greatest overseas player.

“To be amongst those players who played for this great club is a huge honour in itself.

“So lucky to have played with so many influential blokes that changed my thinking and approach on the game.”

During his illustrious career as an international and first-class fast bowler, Donald took over 2500 wickets (330 Test, 272 ODI, 1216 First-class, 684 List A and 2 T20 wickets).

On 1 May 2020, Donald will officially start his new role in Bloemfontein and the head coach of the Knights.
